Letters from our
Readers - November
Someone finally got our point
In your Bullpen section of issue 27 I was astounded after reading this.
You have a person raising cain about racism, who is obvously racist him or her self. I could care less what a street is named. (even though half the streets in America are named after Mr. King)I don't belong to any hate group or organization, but I was highly aggravated at this person for their blatant use of words. "Pissed -off, beer swilling, Springer loving rednecks" is like me saying "hand out wanting, crack smoking, don't-know-who-my-daddy-was-cause my-momma-was-a-crack-whore nigger"! How horrible society has become when it is O.K. for someone who wants to be treated equally can publicly state such a rascist view. I was raised to treat everyone as an individual and by their words and actions, regardless of color or any other God given trait. I consider myself a redneck because of my working outdoors and getting a red neck (wonder if that is where he word originated), I drink beer and am starting to see where the hate from the hate groups comes from...people like the one who wrote the article in such poor taste. It is a shame that white males and God are the only two things left in this country that can be put down and slandered without someone wanting to sue them. A tip for the person who wrote the article....stick to the topics and stop sinking to the hate group level, which means no name calling or showing your hate...maybe then someone might feel your plight. I don't remember Mr. King preaching hate ar name calling..take a pointer from him if you won't take one from me.

High Noon in Montgomery County
WOW, Are you looking for a job at MCSO??? You were kissing some serious butt. If you didn't know, officers are trying to leave there because of the present sheriff. They don't like for their jobs to be threatened when they don't want to pull out money from their own pockets to pay for Guy Williams fish fry tickets. FYI the officers are told to NOT return tickets only the $100.00 no matter what. Yes, officers in the past have been seriously repremanded for not selling all 10 tickets.
By the way, they have to secretly look for new jobs cause when Guy Williams finds out they are looking he fires them. With a Texas Peace Officers licence if you are fired from a police department you can not be hired on with a civil service agence (ie. Conroe Police Department) for 5 years, that of course explains why Guy williams did not want civil service to go thru. That and, of course, he can't fire anybody anytime he wants with civil service in play.
I love the part about David Parks, good thing you did not mention all the publicity that he (& Guy Williams) got when a female inmate reported she had been sexualy harrased by David Parks in the jail and how interesting it was to find out after she was released and went back home to east county, low and behold if David Parks gets transfered out to east county and she ends up dead, on the news they showed an officer that had videoed a conversation with this women about David Parks, that whole deal was sweep under the rug.
Then of course you should have countinued the part about Guy saying he wasn't going to run again and how David Parks was keeping his word to not run against him. Why didn't Guy promise David he would'nt run against him? Well, maybe he knew after the whole 50 some odd people that showed up at David Parks fund raiser he should do something to save the poor boy!!
Another fun fact about Guy Williams, he sent out a memo telling all his employees he was not running again and to find the best person they think is qualified, and get politically involved and back them with their support. How many of these employees have had to deal with retribrution on comitting to someone else since his decision to run again?
How dirty can Guy Williams get when it comes to his treatment towards commisioners court and his employees? I can get you a number of letters written by Guy Williams that shows his true colors. Now, no one out there really sees any of this stuff and there is a lot more out there that is not any better. I sure wish a newspaper would get something right, at least throw in some of the truth every once in a while.
Maybe even have this letter printed in your newspaper. I am a very concered citizen not employeed by Montgomery County and would like to see some facts on the true Guy Williams. Check out the latest CLEAT news paper and learn some true facts.
Thank you for taking the time to hear some of the truth.

Right to Life a personal issue
I agree with the editor in so far as that the "right to life" issue is a business to be sorted out by the people involved and not by the government. But since when has it been necessary to use the phrase "ultra-conservative" ten times to illustrate the point? Now I don't claim to be conservative or liberal to any degree, but it would seem to me that if one were trying to convince people of the magnitude of this specific case and the precedent it could set in future similar cases, that a rational person would try not to alienate anyone of any party alignment from understanding their point. It seems to me that the editor has assumed that anyone who considers themselves conservative will automatically agree with Jeb Bush and his administration's actions. I find that assumption to be entirely ridiculous and false. Most of the "ultra-conservative" rhetoric that I have followed makes the same claims that the government makes too much of a habit of intervening in people's affairs and should be more limited in its power in that regard. My suggestion would be to try reading up on some of the works of the conservative thinker and editor of National Review magazine, William F. Buckley, instead of focusing on pompous idiots like Rush Limbaugh.
My belief is that there are far too many overzealous idiots in politics on both sides and that it is foolish and shortsighted for people to sit around pointing fingers at each other. If you have strong convictions about this case, then you should try to be objective about it and reach as many people as you can, including your elected representatives.
I just hope that these people can stop drawing battle lines and try to resolve this issue for Terri Schiavo's sake.

Ultra-Conservatives should butt out of Florida Case
Unfortunately Terri's situation is not as bleak as her husband would have everyone believe. Terri is not in a "Vegetative" state, she is alive, aware and responsive. She is severely brain damaged, but not brain dead. This is not a "right to die" case, this is a "right to kill" (or murder) case, so that Michael can have access to the hundreds of thousands of dollars in Terri's estate and to free himself from further caring for her.
It appears that we care more about spotted owls than about the life of a (currently) helpless woman.

Glad You Agree that I.D. Should be Taught
Regarding the article “Evolved by Design”, by Mark Williams, Oct 24 - 30, 2003, let me say that I agree with his comment, “And why not just teach both Intelligent Design and Evolution and let the student make up his or her own mind?” That is exactly what many of us want to see, and what the “No Child Left Behind” U.S. Congressional legislation guidelines of 2002 advocate.
I love it when the left comes all the way around to see things like the right sees them. It is an issue of free speech.
Evolutionism has so many holes, so many unanswered questions, and there are many alternatives to its interpretations. We need to teach all sides. Otherwise, as it is currently, we are pushing a dogma and preventing critical thinking.
Karyl Palmisano, Mark Williams’ star interviewee for his article, likes to represent herself as a liberal Christian in the press. But she is a member of the American Humanist Association, an atheist organization whose creed is defined by the Humanist Manifesto’s 1,2,and 3. No wonder she is so threatened by teaching alternatives to evolutionism like Intelligent Design.
Perhaps her Unitarianism can encompass atheism, but atheism is about as far from a Christian faith as you can be. The one pre-supposes no God. The other not only pre-supposes God, but God’s only begotten Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gay Unions
I saw another column by Donald Kaul in my local paper this morning...
I wonder if your area of the country really agrees with this guys drivel... I found this mornings article offensive... The one you ran about gay unions I disagree with as well because of this. I am not opposed to gay marriage in a church... just outside of one.
Here is the deal I have family members who are gay (both men and women) they have 2 incomes. They live pretty well because of it. My wife has a masters degree in accounting and is staying home to be a mother (our decision) but you know what... If the government legalizes gay unions my kids who we have sacrificed to raise as good contributing members of society are going to fund the retirements and pay for the govt. benefits that society receives in the future... for our gay relatives. Sure you can say that married 2 income straight couples who have chosen not to have children benefit the same way... (This is another topic but I am opposed to that as well) Society as a whole needs to support families. Imagine what would happen if every person under 20 years old chose to be gay from here on out. 100% population decline in one generation. Society could not continue.
In my marketing courses we called gay and straight couples with 2 incomes and no kids... DINKs Dual Income No Kids... As far as society is concerned this is a fairly selfish way to live. If we chose to not have kids we would reduce our expenderatures and increase our disposable income by $40 to $65,000 per year... That would be nice....
But I would not expect society to reward me for this behavior. Sure there are other ways to address this (increase the per child deductions so families are really the ones receiving the benefit while reducing the positive impact that being "married" has on ones tax burden. But if this were the case I am sure we would have much less interest in getting the government to recognize such unions.

Responce to Tigs letter about the 1972 Ford Truck
It was not the 1972 pickup that polluted the enviroment, It was the people.
I grew up in Conroe in the 60's and 70's. River Plantation,Magnolia Bend were still
dirt roads. Grogan Rd still had a saw mill. 1960 was called Jack Rabbit Road, beautiful pine trees were all you could see.The same goes for Humble, all trees.
The Woodlands never excisted. There was only 1 high school. Good old CHS.
We had no police on our campus ,there were no need for them. Those were the Good Old Days. Jack Reeves and Larry Evans Sr. were our sheriffs.

Confederate Flag Flap
Like many Southern Americans, including many black Southern Americans, while not owning or displaying a Confederate flag, I am very offended by any individual or group that doesn't even try to understand that the Confederate stars and bars battle flag is dear to the hearts of Southerners because it is one of the symbols of our proud Southern heritage, especially when those individuals and groups use the terms "AFRICAN American" and "whites" in their conversation.
We are AMERICANS...all of us!
When some of America's black citizens and their "friends" set themselves apart from "whites" by using the term AFRICAN Americans, our fellow black Americans and others who use that description are in fact practicing segregation, being divisive, and showing prejudice against "whites," especially Southerners, while implying some kind of allegiance and loyalty to Africa.
I have some very good and dear black friends who proudly proclaim that they are "black Americans." Amen!
I am a German-Swiss-English-French-and-other white Southern American. Wouldn't it be ridiculous for me to insist that everyone address me that way?
Like slavery, the Congressional Black Caucus, the "Miss Black America" Beauty Pageant, the Negro College Fund, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and similar divisive organizations should be abolished immediately.
All of us need to be working to unite the citizens of the United States of America and right all wrongs instead of being divisive and inflaming segments of American society, pitting one segment against another, which is currently being done by the Democratic candidates and others.

National Prematurity Awareness Day
November 18th has been designated by the March of Dimes as National Prematurity Awareness Day. Premature births have been escalating at an alarming rate in the past 20 years nationally and in Texas.
Although nearly half of all premature births have no known cause, we do know some risk factors—including maternal age, a history of preterm birth, chronic disease in the mother, and smoking—increase the likelihood of preterm birth. Women who receive prenatal care are more likely to have access to services that identify problems early and may help improve the health of mothers and infants. According to studies by the Institute of Medicine, uninsured women receive fewer prenatal services and report greater difficulty in obtaining needed care than women with insurance, and their babies, when born without insurance are more likely to be sick and less likely to receive needed hospital services than insured infants. The most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 2002, more than 1 million Texas women of childbearing age were without health insurance. One step towards addressing this problem is to restore Medicaid funding for pregnant women that has been eliminated in the most recent round of state budget cuts. For example, women in a family of four with a 2003 income of $30,000 are now ineligible. Restoring health insurance coverage for this population will go a long way toward assuring that their babies have a healthy start in life.

Cleveland on the Square
Great article on “Cleveland on the Square.” Someone needs to open some eyes in this town of Conroe. Look at the businesses shutting down. North Frazier now looks more and more like South Frazier. But maybe I will become a DJ at a bar so I can receive training to become a Justice of the Peace (Trey Spikes.) If it was good enough for Trey, it should be good enough for this good-ol-boy.

Orchids... not Osama
Many thanks for your story about my plight with the feds over the orchids. It was well written and factual. This is not the kind of thing our tax-payer money should be wasted on. Where is our government going when it can attack private citizens and turn their lives upside-down on a whim. If a search warrants can be obtained with 1/2 truths and comments taken out of context, we are all in serious trouble.
I appreciate your efforts to bring this to light and I have sent your story on to the investigating special agent on this case for his opinion. No doubt, he will not be thrilled to be shown in this light.
At this time, we have several good attorneys in Conroe who want to defend us for free because they see a need to get this sort of thing stopped before they are allowed to do it to anyone. We have also been contacted by the ACLU to see if they want to get involved. About all we can do is fight for our rights and publicity is certainly one of the ways.
We'll keep you posted as anything develops.

Farber Strongly Blunts Move to Appoint Him to MCHD Board
Acting in response to inquiries about serving on the Montgomery County Hospital District, Steven H. Farber, M.D. today strongly denied he has any intention of running for any position on the board and would not accept an appointment if one were offered.
"I have no desire to serve on the MCHD Board of Directors in any capacity," the founder and Chairman of Health Excellence And Responsible Taxation (HEART), said after receiving telephone calls and emails regarding that possibility.
The confusion arose following a regular meeting of the MCHD Monday night when board member Nicol Huff suggested the board appoint Farber to the At-Large Position 1 currently held by another member who is running for At-Large Position 3. Huff currently holds the latter post.
Her motion to appoint Farber failed.
Farber attended the meeting, to urge MCHD board members to offer healthcare to undocumented workers as authorized by HB2292 approved during the 78th session of the Texas Legislature. Several members of HEART also attended the session to support the important indigent care issue and disseminated relevant information to the board members and those who attended.
In disavowing the appointment move, Farber stated "I feel I can be of more help to the citizens of Montgomery County through my work with the volunteers of HEART,” which has a mission of promoting accessible, accountable and affordable healthcare.
“My primary goal is to continue to provide quality healthcare to my patients as I have done for 20 years and to improve the healthcare of every individual in Montgomery County through HEART. I have no intention of running for public office, nor do I have a desire to do so in the foreseeable future.”

I won’t elect a lawyer
Just another example of how justice is for sale. The lawyers of this country have proven again that you can get away with anything if you have enough money. And why is this........because the lawmakers and judges are all former lawyers and they have created this special nook for themselves where the "the money is fine and the living is easy. And we continue to allow this. I can promise this, I will never vote for another elected official who's background is in law. Just plumbers and meat-cutters for Congress from now on.

Save our ERs
Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, Betsy Schwartz, Executive Director of the Mental Health Association and Dr. Guy Clifton, chairman of Save Our ERs announced today the beginning of an initiative to improve access to primary healthcare for all residents of the region.
"The real crisis is that we have too many people needing basic health care, and they have no other place to go except hospital emergency rooms," said Dr. Clifton. "It's time for our community to find health care alternatives to the ERs and reserve the ERs for true emergencies."
Over 800,000 people in Harris County are without health insurance at any given time--one of the highest rates in the nation. Fifty-seven percent of the patients that end up in local emergency rooms have minor or non-urgent complaints.
"We intend to take a comprehensive and collaborative look at the systemic causes of our crowded emergency rooms," said Robert Eckels, County Judge. "This is the next step in the initiative we began at the Legislature last spring to address the dangerous situation of drive-bys at crowded emergency rooms."
Betsy Schwartz, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Greater Houston, said, "MHA Houston is pleased to be part of this new effort to improve access to healthcare in Harris County. The fact that mental health is included as an integral part of this project demonstrates that community leaders recognize mental health care as a fundamental part of all health care. We are hopeful that this initiative will result in healthcare system improvements that will prevent people from having to reach a crisis before they are able to access treatment."
Through the financial support of the Harris County Health Facilities Development Corporation, Save Our ERs has hired The Lewin Group to assess how uninsured patients in Harris County currently access the healthcare system and to propose options to better organize and utilize existing resources. The Lewin Group has 33 years of experience delivering objective analyses and strategic recommendations for projects that range from health system organization to management and financing at the federal, state, and local levels.
The Lewin Group's process will include data analysis, input from key medical and community stakeholders and a scan of approaches implemented in other communities. An oversight committee will review initial recommendations. Lewin's final report is expected to be delivered by the summer of 2004.
During the 2003 State Legislature, Save Our ERs--a coalition of prominent physicians, business, hospital and government leaders--was able to obtain state funding for Houston trauma centers. "Save Our ERs has called upon the leadership of this community in the past and insurmountable obstacles have been overcome," Dr. Clifton said. "With focused attention and widespread commitment, we can improve the delivery of emergency services in our community."

Patriotism vs. Politics
The Bush Republicans have been pushing the idea that anyone who opposes their radical Right Wing agenda is somehow not a patriot. The opposite is true. Patriotism in the United States of America should be defined as an adherence to traditional American values, institutions, ways of doing things and our Constitution (especially the Bill of Rights).
Unfortunately, the Corporate Media has been very active spreading the doctrine of Republican Political Correctness that says criticizing the terrible performance of the Bush Republicans in dealing with national security, homeland security and civil liberties is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. This doctrine undermines traditional American values. Criticizing political leaders when their performance sucks is an American duty and not just a Constitutionally protected right.
The Bush Administration is the gang that cannot shoot straight when it comes to performance in office. They are creating a much larger terrorist threat in the Middle East with a failed Iraq policy. They undermined our tradition where we only waged war on nations or groups that attacked America first by invading an Iraq that did not really threaten us. Our leaders traditionally did not lie to the American people in order to take us to war. The Bush Republicans have betrayed the trust of the American people.
Our Constitutionally protected rights defined in the Bill of Rights have been largely cancelled by the Bush Republicans because of the falsely named Patriot Act. The fact that the Bush Administration named this attack on freedom the Patriot Act shows that they are willing to lie about patriotism!
Republican Senate candidates and White House operatives lied about Democratic candidates on issues of patriotism during the 2002 elections. The Vietnam War hero and disabled veteran running in Georgia was falsely tied to Bin Laden in Republican ads in Georgia. He was sadly defeated by these smears. This unkind treatment was from a Georgia Republican Party led by the former Christian Coalition activist Ralph Reed. Was this treatment of a proven Patriot truly Christian, just or patriotic?
The ties between Saudi elements with links to terrorist funding and protectors in the Bush Republican camp are widely documented. The disclosure of the identity of a covert CIA agent for political reasons by Bush operatives is illegal and traitorous. These Republicans are more interested in politics than real patriotism.

Seventh Felony Earns Parolee Probation In Montgomery County Court System
The Montgomery County Prosecutor’s office recently entered into a plea with a six time felon, named Susan Smith (name changed), for committing her seventh felony. They had originally charged her with another habitual criminal, but for some unknown reason the charge was dropped. Susan Smith is a repeat parole violator with a habitual criminal conviction in Harris County along with arrest and conviction records in many counties surrounding Houston. Ms. Smith is also a drug addict with two dead infant children fallen by mysterious sudden deaths which no agency is willing to investigate.
Her criminal history dates back to 1982. Her addiction is fed by a pattern of checking herself into hospitals and undergoing over 20 unnecessary surgeries just for a fix. No longer eligible for Medicaid, she has amassed more than $300,000 in hospital and doctor bills. She knows the system well.
She frequents hospital Emergency Rooms where she hardly ever sees the same physicians. She has been known to drive within a 100 miles radius to visit numerous Emergency Rooms (sometimes driving as far as Galveston for Klonipin at UTMB). When that no longer works for her, she steals prescription pads and calls in or writes her own prescription. She most always pays with a hot check. All of this can be easily verified through public records. Dates of most of her hospital visits can be provided.
Susan Smith even manages to get her fix in jail. She fakes stomach ailments which allow her to do most of her time in the infirmary instead of general population. Faking illnesses also gets her out of work detail. She gets pain medication on a regular basis or she gets sent to a hospital where they are unaware of her history and administer more and more pain medication.
This same information was provided to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Investigator, named John Stephenson and also to Assistant DA Patty McGinnis.
Despite receiving calls from several of her friends and victims asking for her incarceration they gave her probation. Ms. Smith has family members who believe if she is not locked up, her addiction will kill her. Rehabilitation has proved unsuccessful.
Doing TDC time for two years of ten year sentence did not deter her from committing further crimes. She went back to pills the same day she got out. Ms. Smith continues to be a threat to society. She will continue to commit crimes to feed her habit. This is a woman who fed her boyfriend’s teenage daughter Vicodin. That child turned her in to her parole officer. No real action was taken.
Is there such a thing as probation for a seventh felony, especially while on parole for a sixth felony ?
Ms. Smith continues to be a threat to society. She is a con artist who has mastered her craft. Otherwise, why is this criminal being released ?

Guy Williams
All that is being said about Guy Williams is true! You must sell fish fry tickets, you must support him, you must agree with him....I thought this was America. Most of the employees and those who know what is going on can't come out publicly for fear of being unemployed or reprimanded in some fashion. I know first hand, my husband was a Sgt. and had an excellent record on his evaluations for the last 13 years...not my husband (because he won't say anything), but I do not care for the Sheriffs ways and the sheriff is fully aware of it. I wrote an editorial article and is was printed. I had not one person or employee say I was wrong or that Guy Williams wasn't that way, instead I had numerous employees call or tell my husband...great someone finally said something, but none of those people will say it themselves. After that article my husband was demoted, transferred to the jail and told he would not see the inside of a patrol car again. This was when there was a shortage of patrol deputies, so that makes one ponder....because of his own ego he is willing to jeopardize the safety of officers and citizens. Not to mention that after that article my husbands evaluations always had a least one negative mark. He requested to talk with the Sheriff face to face on more than one occasion and was always told the Sheriff said he was too busy. I put in a call to him to tell him its my opinion and any frustrations should be taken up with me, but I never received a call back. Even if he doesn't fire someone he has the people he wants in the right positions that will do as they are told and make a person jobs unbearable. My husband was contacted by the Pct 4 Constables office and told a mutual friend had mentioned he was looking to leave the SO and would he be willing to come and interview, thinking this was a great opportunity he went and took the job offer. Once, that office kept probing for info on the sheriffs office and my husband said he didn't have any information to give of wrong doings, he did not want to get involved in their differences, he just wanted to do job he was hired for....he was fired for breaking policy, they can't produce evidence on any written or verbal reprimands and can't specify what policy he broke. So now because I publicly gave my opinion of Guy Williams, my husband has lost a 14 year career with the county and is unemployed and our entire family suffers. Again, I ask you I thought this was America. Haven't all those veterans been fighting for freedom, maybe freedom elsewhere, but it doesn't exist in Montgomery County at the Sheriffs Department or at Pct. 4 Constables office.
No wonder civil service was voted in favor of, but where is it and now its too late for us.

Sale Of The MCHD Building
A very good story, with lots of good questions that need to be answered before the sale goes through.
I wonder why the board did not advertise through a commercial real estate agent, and allow the public sufficient time to evaluate the property and respond. To rush the sale because one bidder has some loose tax cash he must spend in a hurry is to rob the public of the right to a fully competitive, arms length sale for the benefit of the tax payers and not the buyer in a hurry.
